Death and Succession
It is unknown how Genghis Khan died but there are many theories. The Secret History of the Mongols (a story written by his children after his death), claims he died slowly after falling from horseback. However, many speculate he died from illness or battle wounds.
The Secret History of the Mongols was written only for the eyes of the royal family, so there is nobody else to confirm these claims.
On his death bed, Genghis Khan granted his third son, Ogedei supreme leadership, giving him control of Eastern Asia. The rest of the land was divided amongst his other sons, His second son Chagatai recieved Northern Asia and Iran, his youngest son Tolui recieved a small portion of land near the Mongolian homeland. His first son, Jochi had died years prior, so his modern day Russia was given to his son Batu.
Years prior to his death, Genghis Khan asked to be buried in secret. When he was taken to the burial site anyone who attempted to follow was killed. Today, nobody knows exactly where he was buried but it is believed to be somewhere near his birth place.
